Virtual turbine goes online

Animated film explains how steam turbines work in a simple and clear way.

Under the direction of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, an animated film has emerged from many months of intensive collaboration that explains the generation of electricity in a steam power plant in a simple and understandable way. The project involved energy engineers and mechanical engineering experts from the HSZG, media computer scientists from the HTW Dresden, media educators, psychologists and representatives of the Hirschfelde power plant. The turbine shown in the film is based on a real turbine from the decommissioned Hirschfelde power plant. Its technical data provided the basis for the digitization and animation.

The elaborately designed video film is therefore not just a virtual addition to the HSZG's MINT Trail. The virtual turbine also conveys an impression of former power generation technology as it was used in Saxony's oldest large-scale power plant - despite the fact that the machine hall of the power plant in Hirschfelde can no longer be visited.

In future, the virtual turbine will be used to give young people in particular with unjustified reservations about technical and engineering professions low-threshold access to an important field of application in energy and mechanical engineering. It is one of the first building blocks for the Virtual Internship Park, which gives pupils and students the opportunity to experience machines, processes and practical applications online.
