Pupil university starts its 3rd semester

62 pupils took part in the opening event of the successful series of events.

The Schüler-Hochschule am Samstag is starting its third semester. The doubling of the number of participants seen in the previous year (an average of 30 students took part in 2014/15) has continued this year: 62 students, mainly from the 10th grade of various secondary schools, took part in the opening event on November 7. The event was organized by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

In his lecture, Prof. Volkmar Weise spoke about similarities in nature and technology. He focused on flying machines and their role models in nature: birds. The very clear lecture included formulas, lots of photos and practical demonstrations.

After a short break with delicious lemonade, which was fortunately provided free of charge by the Menschel-Limo company from Hainewalde, as in previous years, there were guided tours of the laboratory. Laboratory engineer Felix Rothe had asked his colleagues for reinforcements at short notice so that the students could experience the diversity of the faculty in small groups.

Participants were:

- Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Ralph Heidrich

undefinedProduction Metrology Laboratory

- Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Wolfgang Meinck

undefinedMaterials technology laboratory

- Dr.-Ing. Thomas Kurze

undefinedEnergy Technology Cabinet

- Dipl.-Ing. M. Eng. Friedrich Wodarczack

undefinedThermodynamics Laboratory

- Dr.-Ing.

undefinedFluid Dynamics Laboratory

- Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Felix Rothe

undefinedThermohydraulics laboratory

(IPM) - Dipl.-Ing. Alt

Many thanks to all colleagues who participated in the laboratory tours. Colleague Wodarczack writes in his feedback about the visit to the Energy Technology Cabinet:

"With good humor and great attention, the (perhaps) prospective 10 female engineers were interested in the eh. Zittau teaching and research reactor as well as the experiments with the fuel cell from regenerative energy technology. Only the train timetable prevented them from staying longer, which ended for some with a musical serenade."

The next Student University on Saturday will take place on January 23 in Görlitz . The computer science department will then be inviting students to the parallel topics: "Making the right decisions is computer science" and "Immersive Experimence - interacting with the environment via smartphone". So far, 67 students have registered.

What is the Student University on Saturday?

Pupils from grammar schools and secondary schools from year 9 onwards are invited to immerse themselves in the exciting world of engineering, natural sciences and economics on five Saturdays between November 2015 and April 2016. The host faculty prepares a specialist topic and provides the students with interesting insights into theory and practice (laboratories). It is possible to participate in all or selected topics.

The event starts atTermine der Veranstaltungsreiheat 10 a.m. with a one-hour introduction. After a lemonade break, laboratory tours and/or experiments take place until 12.30 p.m. at the latest.

Students must register in advance at www.hszg.de/schuelerhochschule. Further information on each topic can also be found here.

Participating students will receive a certificate of participation from Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences afterwards.
