During the media project days, pupils explored the opportunities and dangers of new media.
The media project days took place at Augustum-Annen-Gymnasium Görlitz from February 5 to 7. Pupils from two seventh grade classes dealt intensively with the use, possibilities and dangers of new media and reflected on their own media behavior. In addition to the Saxon Training and Testing Channel Görlitz (SAEK Görlitz), the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences was the second extracurricular learning location.
Here, 25 students worked on topics such as "Big Data", "Credibility on the Internet/Fake News" and a video street survey in Görlitz. To this end, passers-by were asked about their usage behavior in relation to new media and social networks using a video camera and microphone and a video film was edited in the video studio of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Students on the Social Work course provided the technical support, enabling them to put their newly acquired knowledge of active media work with children and young people into practice and thus consolidate it in the long term.
The results of all the working groups were then presented to the parents by the students on February 8 at a "media parents' evening" at Augustum-Annen-Gymnasium Görlitz. In addition to thoughtfulness, there were also many aha-effects among the parents present. Because even recommended media and legal youth media protection do not relieve parents of their responsibility for media education. Parents also have a duty to address the issue. After all, children need people around them with whom they can talk about their experiences and problems in the digital world. Avoidance pedagogy is the wrong approach; it is much more important to promote media skills comprehensively. This media literacy can be actively and sustainably developed if parents and schools work together.
