In Search of Models/Theories for the Relationship Between Art and Dementia
In Germany, there is a manageable number of verifiable projects—well under one hundred—in the field of art and dementia. With funding from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), the Institute for Cultural Infrastructure Saxony (IKS) is currently working on a study titled “Art and Dementia,” as part of which we plan to present a “Guidelines for Model Projects in Culture, Art, and Cultural Education for People with Dementia.”However, as far as we can see at present, there is a lack of substantial theoretical foundations upon which the guidelines could be based.
Following Frölich’s line of thought, one must assume that no optimal measurement tools have yet been found or developed to adequately demonstrate the effects of music therapy interventions on patients with Alzheimer’s dementia. In order to conduct more targeted research and develop measurement instruments, an explanatory framework is also needed. So far, the existing studies in this field remain very isolated from one another; there are no research strands or even replication studies. Building on our proven event series, the “International Summer School of the Arts,” we aim to remedy this situation somewhat by enlisting the support of recognized experts. At the same time, we hope to receive critical input from our students and interested guests, whom we aim to introduce to this topic.
