International Summer School of the Arts Görlitz 28.09. - 02.10.2015
In search of models/theories for the relationship between art and dementia
In Germany, there is a manageable number of well under a hundred verifiable projects in the field of art and dementia. With funding from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), the Institute for Cultural Infrastructure Saxony (IKS) is currently working on a study entitled "Art and Dementia", as part of which we intend to present a "Guide to model projects on culture, art and cultural mediation for people with dementia" by the end of 2015. As far as we can see at the moment, however, there is a lack of substantial theory on which the guide could be based.
Following Frölich, it must be assumed that no optimal measuring instruments have yet been found or developed to be able to optimally prove the effects of music therapy applications in patients with Alzheimer's dementia. An explanatory approach is also required in order to be able to investigate and develop measurement instruments in a more targeted manner. So far, the existing studies in this field are still very isolated from each other, there are no research strands or even replications. Many individual small indications are being pursued without being able to deepen one direction. (Söthe-Röck, Astrid 2009: Music in old age and with Alzheimer's dementia. Skills in dealing with short musical rhythms, Diss. Univ. Paderborn, p. 62)
Following on from our tried and tested series of events, the "International Summer School of the Arts", we want to remedy this situation a little by securing the support of proven experts. At the same time, we hope to receive critical input from our students and interested guests, whom we would like to introduce to the topic.
