Outstanding achievements in teaching

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is awarding a teaching prize for the second time in 2017. Proposals can be submitted until December.

The university is awarding  a teaching prize for thesecond time . This is intended to recognize the above-average commitment and outstanding achievements in teaching at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. Furthermore, the special importance of university teaching as a whole is made visible and an incentive is created for lecturers at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences to continuously develop their teaching. Thus, the awarding of the teaching prize promotes the improvement of the quality of teaching and forms an essential instrument in the quality management of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.

The award can be presented to
a) university lecturers, teaching staff for special tasks, research assistants, lecturers, tutors or
b) groups of lecturers in accordance with letter a)
c) lecturers in accordance with letter a) in cooperation with laboratory engineers as a group

of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and cooperation partners involved in the implementation of study programs for which the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is responsible. As a rule, the prize is only awarded to one person or group.

The prize is endowed as a cash prize of 1,000 euros as a one-off payment. The awarding of the prize is subject to the provision of funds by the Förderverein der Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz e.V..
The acceptance of the prize by the prizewinner is not linked to any consideration. The prizewinner may freely dispose of the prize money. If applicable, income tax regulations must be observed.
Individual lecturers or groups of lecturers with above-average commitment and outstanding achievements in teaching can be nominated for the teaching award.
The faculties and central institutions are entitled to nominate candidates in coordination with the student councils of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.
For the cooperation partners involved in degree programs, the management/leadership in conjunction with the cooperating faculty is entitled to nominate candidates.
Following a decision by the relevant faculty council or central institution, the dean or director  must submit at least the following documents in writing to the Rector (Secretariat, Ms Dellf)by 08.12.2017 :

  • Excerpt from the minutes of the Faculty Council meeting with resolution,
  • Meaningful justification of the award worthiness of the nominee by the proposing unit,
  • CV/tabular curriculum vitae of the nominee,
  • Certificates of participation in university/didactic qualification measures (as copies) are desired if available,
  • Proof or list of special achievements in teaching over the last three years, supplemented if necessary by teaching materials of the teaching program/new concept/method,
  • Results of teaching evaluations from the last three years.

Documents that are not complete and submitted on time will not be considered.
The selection criteria for the award decision are

  • Specificity of the teaching activity/concept with regard to the degree of innovation and/or the implementation of didactic implications (i.e., didactic approach pursued, perception of heterogeneity, interdisciplinarity, special practical or research relevance, etc.),
  • Results of student course evaluations,
  • Degree of qualification acquired in didactics as well as the scope and period of completed university/didactic qualification measures (if available),
  • Compliance with formal requirements (e.g. reporting grades on time).

The candidate's special commitment and personality should also be taken into account in the overall assessment of the candidate. The following criteria can take this context into account:

  • Extent of staffing and financial resources in the working environment, extent of teaching load/teaching load in accordance with DAVOHS,
  • Advice and support for students beyond individual courses,
  • Involvement in the development of study programs, in international cooperation in higher education, in the academic self-administration of the faculty or university.

The chairperson of the selection committee forwards the selection committee's recommendation to the Rectorate and the Friends of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The Rectorate and the Sponsors' Association may submit their vote in writing within one month of receiving the proposal.
Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will issue a certificate to the award winner and the chairperson of the selection committee will present the teaching award during the graduation ceremony in April 2018.
Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will promote the reputation of the award and the award winner in an appropriate manner and in consultation with the award winner, in particular by announcing the award in the university's internal and regional media.
