Every September marks one of the most exciting times of the entire academic year for students, faculty, and the entire university staff: As the upcoming winter semester begins, HSZG prepares to welcome many new faces, while first-year students, for their part, prepare for a completely new chapter in their lives. The “Come In” Weeks are an initiative offered by the university to all newcomers to help them navigate the transition to college as smoothly as possible.
At the heart of the “Come In” Weeks are the preparatory courses in the foundational subjects of mathematics, chemistry, electrical engineering, and—for the first time this year—physics. These courses review and refresh high school knowledge and establish the baseline required for the respective first-semester lectures. This allows our first-year students to ease into everyday student life, become familiar with the procedures in lectures, seminars, and tutorials, and begin their first semester with good academic preparation.
Since fun is, of course, just as important as work, the Student Council (StuRa) and the Faculty Student Committees (FSR) are offering a particularly diverse recreational program during this year’s “Come in” Weeks. Through pub crawls, cellar tours, the Landeskronen hike, and various barbecue events, incoming freshmen will not only have the opportunity to get to know the cities of Zittau and Görlitz and the surrounding region but also to forge important connections with fellow students and student representatives in the faculties and at the university. The Student Council has also come up with something for anyone interested in sports. Over the coming weekends, we’ll be heading out into nature to paddle on the Neisse River and go rock climbing in the Zittauer Gebirge Climbing Forest.
To kick off the “Come In” Weeks in Zittau and give our new students a proper welcome, a large welcome team gathered on Wednesday. Staff members from “Diversity as a Strength,” who organized the “Come In” Weeks, were on hand to handle registration and answer general questions. With the study scouts, student academic advisors, and representatives from the Student Council (StuRa) and the various student councils (FSR), the pre-course participants also got to know all the important contacts right away—in case they encounter academic, organizational, or psychosocial issues during their studies.
Next, we look forward to welcoming our Görlitz pre-course participants, whom we’ll have the pleasure of greeting this coming Monday, September 18, 2017, on the Görlitz campus. That’s when the math pre-course and the computer science warm-up will also begin there. The Görlitz student scouts—supported once again by representatives from “Studierende beraten Studierende,” the StuRa, and the FSR—are already ready and waiting to welcome them.
