Every September, one of the most exciting phases of the entire academic year takes place for students, lecturers and the entire university staff: At the start of the upcoming winter semester, the HSZG prepares for many new faces, the first-year students in turn prepare for a completely new phase in their lives. The Come In Weeks are an offer from the university for all newcomers to make the transition to studying as smooth as possible.
The Come In Weeks focus on preliminary courses in the basic subjects of mathematics, chemistry, electrical engineering and, for the first time this year, physics. In these courses, students review and refresh their knowledge from their A-levels and work on the starting level for the respective first semester lectures. This gives our first-year students a gentle introduction to everyday study life, familiarizes them with the procedures in lectures, seminars and tutorials and ensures they are well prepared for their first semester.
As it goes without saying that fun should not be neglected after work, the Student Council (StuRa) and the Student Representative Councils (FSR) are offering a particularly varied leisure program during the Come in weeks this year. With a pub crawl, cellar tour, Landeskronen hike and various barbecue events, the future first-year students not only have the opportunity to get to know the cities of Zittau and Görlitz and the surrounding region, but also to make important contacts with fellow students and student representatives in the faculties and at the university. The StuRa has also come up with something for all those who enjoy sporting activities. Over the coming weekends, we will be heading out into nature to paddle on the Neisse and climb in the Zittauer Gebirge climbing forest.
To kick off the Come in weeks in Zittau and give our new students a fitting welcome, an extensive welcome team got together on Wednesday. Diversity-as-strength employees, who organized the Come in weeks, were on hand to register and answer general questions. With the study scouts, student advisors and representatives from the StuRa and the various FSRs, the pre-course participants also got to know all the important contacts should any subject-related, organizational or psychosocial problems arise in the course of their studies.
Next, we look forward to welcoming our Görlitz pre-course participants to the Görlitz campus next Monday, September 18, 2017. That's when the math pre-course and the computer science warm-up will also start there. The Görlitz study scouts, again supported by representatives from Students advise Students, the StuRa and the FSR, are already waiting to welcome them.
