Sign language at the HSZG

German sign language can be learned at the HSZG in Görlitz from October.

People with hearing impairments need support from staff who are proficient in sign language in many areas, such as childcare, education, healthcare, public institutions, and everyday situations. German Sign Language (DGS) is a distinct language with its own grammar and a specific vocabulary.

The German Sign Language certification program allows you to learn a fascinating language while working or studying and to gain new perspectives on language. The German Sign Language training (beginner level) is conducted in accordance with the current framework curriculum.

No prior knowledge is required. It is desirable to have an environment that allows you to use DGS.

Beginner Level Lessons 1 through 10 (200 instructional units):

  • Recognize the structure and patterns of sign language and Deaf culture
  • Acquire a basic understanding of the language; sign and understand simple sentences
  • Introduction to linguistics and memory training
  • Introduction to law, social policy, and the lives and circumstances of Deaf people

The course concludes with a final examination. Graduates receive the “Additional Qualification in German Sign Language” certificate . Upon completion of the basic-level language training, participants will have acquired good communication skills in German Sign Language (DGS). They will have met the language requirements for enrollment in an advanced course or a degree program in sign language
