Fit for the start of your studies!

On September 26, this year's Come In Weeks at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences came to a successful end after 14 days.

In the basic subjects of mathematics, chemistry, electrical engineering, computer science and - for the first time this year - physics, the newcomers received a lot of specialist input. This gives them the best possible preparation for their studies and one of the most beautiful stages of their lives.

Arrived in Zittau

The Come in weeks took place at the Zittau site from 13.09. to 26.09.2017. The number of participants in the pre-courses on offer is evidence of the high demand in the various areas. For example, over 120 interested students took part in the Zittau math pre-course. More than 60 participants made their way to the lecture hall for the physics pre-course. The events in electrical engineering and chemistry each attracted around 30 inquisitive students.

Leisure activities such as a city rally or a pub crawl were also very popular and the registration lists could not be long enough. Even the occasional changeable weather was no deterrent. The cozy part was provided by the numerous barbecue evenings, where energy was recharged and a lively exchange of experiences about the first days at the HSZG took place. Many took the opportunity to make initial contacts with each other, get to know student advisors ("SbSler") from older semesters and get an idea of the campus, city and surrounding area. A canoe trip on the Neisse followed by a visit to the monastery in Ostritz and a return trip by bike was very enjoyable for the participants. A mental fitness workshop provided valuable tips and tricks for concentration.

And in Görlitz too

In Görlitz, too, 45 students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science arrived on the university campus on 18 September 2017, even though the lectures had not yet officially started. Their intention: to attend the mathematics pre-course so that the math modules can no longer cause problems during their studies. The computer science warm-up took place at the same time. Here the participants learned how to create modern websites and web applications with the help of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Adaptation to mobile devices and interaction with the user played a special role here.

In cooperation with the SbS students and the student councils, the study scouts organized various events and offers during the preliminary course. A joint barbecue, an excursion to the Landeskrone, various games to get to know each other and an evening sightseeing tour through Görlitz offered great opportunities to get to know each other better and discover the university, city and region in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our conclusion

In the 2017/18 winter semester, the Come In Weeks once again made a valuable contribution to introducing the many young people who have decided to study at the HSZG.

The organizers and staff of the Diversity as a Strength project would like to thank all those involved who contributed to the success of the numerous teaching and leisure events  - in particular the lecturers of the preliminary courses in mathematics, Prof. Goldmann and Prof. Schnell, Prof. Weber in chemistry and Prof. Schade for conducting the physics course, as well as Ms Paetzold as lecturer of the electrical engineering preliminary course. Many thanks also to all the helpers from SbS, FSR and the StuRa.

We wish all first-year students a successful start to their first semester!
