Fit for the start of your studies!
On September 26, this year’s “Come In” weeks at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences came to a successful close after 14 days.
In the core subjects of mathematics, chemistry, electrical engineering, computer science, and—for the first time this year—physics, the new students received a great deal of subject-specific instruction. This ensures they are well-prepared to begin their studies and one of the most wonderful phases of their lives.
Arrival in Zittau
At the Zittau campus, the “Come In” weeks took place from September 13 to September 26, 2017. The number of participants in the preparatory courses offered reflects the high demand across the various fields. For example, over 120 interested students took part in the math preparatory course in Zittau. More than 60 participants made their way to the lecture hall for the physics preparatory course. The events in electrical engineering and chemistry each drew about 30 eager learners.
Leisure activities, such as a city scavenger hunt or a pub crawl, were also very popular—the registration lists simply couldn’t be long enough to accommodate everyone. Not even the occasionally rather unpredictable weather deterred participants. The numerous barbecue evenings provided a relaxed atmosphere where participants recharged their batteries and engaged in lively discussions about their first few days at HSZG. Many took the opportunity to make their first connections with one another, get to know student advisors (“SbSlers”) from upperclassmen, and get a feel for the campus, the city, and the surrounding area. A kayaking trip on the Neisse River, followed by a tour of the monastery in Ostritz and a return trip by bike, was very well received by the participants. A mental agility workshop provided valuable tips and tricks for improving concentration.
And in Görlitz as well
In Görlitz as well, as early as September 18, 2017, 45 students from the MK faculty had already gathered on the university campus, even though the official start of lectures had not yet taken place. Their goal: to attend the preparatory math course so that the math modules in their degree program would no longer pose a problem. At the same time, the Computer Science Warm-up took place. Here, participants learned how to create modern websites and web applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Adapting to mobile devices and user interaction played a particularly important role.
The study scouts, in cooperation with the student advisors and the Faculty Student Committees, organized various events and activities during the preparatory course. A group barbecue, an excursion to the Landeskrone, various icebreaker games, and an evening sightseeing tour through Görlitz offered good opportunities to get to know one another better and to discover the university, the city, and the region in a relaxed atmosphere.
Our Conclusion
The “Come In” weeks continue to make a valuable contribution during the 2017–2018 winter semester to welcoming the many young people who have chosen to pursue an academic education at HSZG.
The organizers and staff of the “Diversity as a Strength” project would like to thank everyone involved who contributed to the success of the numerous academic and recreational events—in particular the instructors of the preparatory courses in mathematics, Prof. Goldmann and Prof. Schnell, Prof. Weber in chemistry and Prof. Schade for leading the physics course, as well as Ms. Paetzold, who taught the introductory electrical engineering course.
