Starting this week, approximately 180 first-year students are getting their first glimpse into daily life at the university even before the winter semester officially begins. The “Come-in Weeks,” featuring preparatory courses in math, chemistry, and electrical engineering, give our incoming students the opportunity to test and refresh their knowledge of these important subjects. A comprehensive supplementary program is designed to help them get to know their fellow students and the university campus with its wide range of opportunities. The entire event was organized by the MINT Center and the SBS team (Students Advising Students) as part of the “Diversity as a Strength” project. They are supported in this effort by dedicated students from the Faculty Student Committees and the Student Council.
In addition to lab tours, field trips, and campus tours, the program also includes a group barbecue, icebreaker games, and engaging guided tours of Zittau. Immediately after the first math lecture, a wide range of information was available to our freshmen. They received initial guidance on the support options offered by the MINT team, the “Campus Specialists,” and the “Students Advise Students” project, as well as by the department student councils (FSRs) and the Student Council (Stura).
In a relaxed atmosphere, everyone happily took advantage of this opportunity over coffee and cake. Felix from Lörrach surely spoke for many when he said, “I feel very welcome here, and I’m especially impressed by the teaching style of math professor Prof. Dierich and his enthusiasm.”
