German-Czech library project starts!

The new German-Czech project "Learning Space - Library Information Platform" was opened.

As part of the cooperation program to promote cross-border cooperation between the Free State of Saxony and the Czech Republic 2014-2020, Chemnitz University Library, Zittau/Görlitz University Library, Pilsen University Library, Liberec District Science Library and Liberec University Library are jointly designing the "Learning Space - Library Information Platform" project.

The new project was opened in Chemnitz on 31.01.2017. Four cooperation partners already know each other from the previous project (Information without Borders 2013-2014, Saxon-Czech Library Network); the new partner is the Liberec University Library.

The aim of the project is to create a cross-border learning space. The learning space is a place where the modern infrastructure required for studying is available. In addition to access to suitable and up-to-date print and e-media, this includes spatial and technical equipment. In the project, electronic databases and media are to be procured on a consortial basis. On the other hand, the libraries will acquire state-of-the-art media technology and jointly promote the idea of open access (open online access to media). Information literacy will play a very important role, enabling information to be found, processed and passed on efficiently.

At the kick-off event, the topic of "learning space" in the contemporary library was discussed in more detail. Ms. H. Landová, Ph.D., Chairwoman of the Association of University Libraries of the Czech Republic, presented the new role of libraries in her speech. She included the change in user behavior and the resulting need for librarians to acquire new skills. Ms. Landová saw cooperation between libraries as the most important driver of change and adaptation, thus supporting the main idea of the project.

Prof. Dr. habil E. Mehner from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen then described the origin and development of cooperation between Saxony and the Czech Republic and emphasized its importance.

The event was concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. rer. pol. F. Maiwald, Director of the ZKI at our university. The project managers of the individual partner libraries exchanged their expectations of the project in relation to the border region. Key terms such as "library as pioneer, benefits for users, immediate proximity and exchange of experience" were used.

Another project event will take place on 29.03.2017 in Zittau. The topics of the workshop will be the consortial procurement of e-media and cross-border interlibrary loans.
