Opportunities and limitations of teaching with laptops

The Department of Computer Science took part in the 21st School Computer Science Day at TU Dresden with a workshop.

The 21st School Computer Science Day recently took place at TU Dresden. On this day, participating teachers were offered lectures and workshops on current topics in computer science and computer science didactics. The department of computer science at our university was able to contribute with a workshop on the topic of "Laptops to support cooperative and collaborative learning ". The workshop dealt with questions such as "What are the criteria for a meaningful use of digital media in the classroom? Which learning objectives can be achieved with mobile devices and which cannot?"

Using the example of a lesson sequence, the possibilities and limitations of using laptops in the classroom were explained and made tangible. The teaching approach based on role reversal (teacher, student) is transferable to other subjects. Extensive experience with laptop classes stems from the teaching activities of the first lecturer (Stephan Marschner, Salzmannschule Schnepfenthal) as head of the laptop program at the German School Singapore from August 2009 to July 2012.

During a working stay of the second lecturer (Prof. Dr. Christian Wagenknecht, University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science') at the German School Singapore in March 2011, corresponding concepts were evaluated, developed and compared with current research results. The results of this collaboration led to this workshop, which inspired some interesting reflections among the participants.
