A different kind of library introduction

Typically, the introduction to the library and the University Data Centre takes place during orientation week for new students through a lecture in a lecture hall. For the past two years, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has also been offering an alternative approach.

For first-semester students, a new format was developed in collaboration between the “Learning to Learn 2” project and Rolf Funke from the Zittau University Library (HSB). A hands-on orientation session was organized directly at the HSB. This year, a comprehensive program was successfully tested. Our students could choose from various science-related topics. Research on these topics was conducted under guidance using the computers and the HSB’s book collection. Following this, students were able to practice various methods for presenting scientific content during the presentation of their results.

A newly designed handout containing general information about the HSB, group study rooms, and the borrowing process will help students quickly familiarize themselves with the library’s technical facilities in the future.
