An enthusiastic audience of children watched interesting chemistry experiments by the chemistry department.
The Children's Academy is an important instrument of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences to give children between the ages of eight and twelve an insight into various scientific disciplines. The Chemistry department of the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences makes an annual pre-Christmas contribution to this. Interesting chemistry experiments are presented to the audience, which are integrated into an exciting storyline and acted out.
This year, the children from the audience dived into the acting roles and experimented diligently on December 21, 2018. The graduate chemist and laboratory manager for general and inorganic chemistry, Matthias Jeschke, swapped his everyday lab coat for a fairytale storyteller's outfit and presented the audience with a few exciting "Christmas stories".
The stories were well known to the guests and were a summary of the children's show lectures since 2012. They included the adventures of Hansel & Gretel, Benjamin Blümchen, Bibi Blocksberg, Snow White and the seven dwarfs as well as Rudolph the reindeer with his red nose. As every year, Santa Claus was also there and each child received a small gift at the end.
The experiments for this somewhat different kind of lecture are tried out, prepared and carried out by students on the "Chemistry" course. A big thank you for the preparation this year goes to Loreen Alshaabi, Florian Prasse, Leon Müller and Lukas Ortmüller. Special thanks go to Loreen Alshaabi and Florian Prasse for the implementation.
The chemistry department would like to thank all the children and supervisors for their great interest in the event, Frank Schneider and Julius Pahl for the organization, the Friends of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences for their financial support and is already looking forward to the next fairytale lecture for the children's academy.
