Advice and motivation in teaching

HSZG faculty members are using the semester break for professional development in university teaching.

On March 3 and 4, the continuing education workshop on university teaching methods titled “Counseling and Motivation in Teaching,” led by Jörg Heidig, will take place in the newly renovated Z I teaching building in Zittau. Thirteen faculty members from our university are taking advantage of this opportunity for a cross-faculty / trans-faculty teaching-focused exchange. The seminar focuses on current applied knowledge from counseling and communication psychology, combined with practical techniques for motivational and counseling-oriented conversation. The seminar focuses on the “Third Way” of shaping relationships between faculty members and students—an approach that goes beyond knowledge transfer, instrumental rationality, and authority—and is described as follows: Despite all hierarchies, faculty members serve as “advisors” and “helpers” to students. Faculty members support students in their efforts to develop an interest in a subject and to study with dedication.

The next opportunity for this special form of collegial exchange on teaching-related topics will take place again during the break from classes starting in August 2016. For information and dates, visit www.hszg.de/hochschuldidaktik
