Professor Raj Kollmorgen with a lecture in the lecture series "Borders, Upheavals, Transformations: Arts and Cultures before and after 1989/90" at Leipzig University
As part of the lecture series "Borders, Upheavals, Transformations: Arts and Cultures before and after 1989/90", which is taking place this summer semester at Leipzig University in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education, Professor Raj Kollmorgen will give his lecture "Ex/Post or: The (Discursive) Legacy of Unity in (Post-)Transformation" on 29.04.2025 from 5 to 7 pm on the Augustusplatz campus in lecture hall 12. He will discuss today's (academic, mass media, fiction, etc.) discourses on East Germany, German unification and the current challenges that refer to the past. Without a reconstruction of the transformative break in 1989, the early logic of unification and the resulting formation of discourse, it is not only the contributions, conflict constellations and strategies for action in the German-German discourses that remain unclear or misunderstood right up to the present day. The patterns of perception and judgment in the dispute over shaping the present and the future - between "transformation fatigue", "East German scepticism towards democracy" and special "East German transformation competence" - can hardly be adequately explained without a historical perspective. The lecture explores this terrain and presents a historical-sociological approach to interpretation.
