About the degree program

Would you like to accompany and support children aged 0 to 12 in their development? On the Bachelor's degree course in childhood education at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, you will acquire comprehensive skills for professional educational work with children and their families. The course provides you with in-depth specialist knowledge and practical skills for qualified educational design.

Interdisciplinary education for child-oriented support

In this practice-oriented degree program, you will develop a wide range of skills in the following areas

  • Educational science fundamentals of pedagogy and sociology
  • Developmental psychology and individual child development processes
  • Empirical social research and childhood research
  • Early educational diagnostics, didactics and methodology
  • Methods for gender-sensitive, intercultural and inclusive educational design

A special feature of the degree course is the close integration of theory and practice. Through extensive practical phases - from work shadowing in the first semester to a 60-day internship in the fifth semester - you will apply your knowledge directly and develop a reflective professional identity. You will learn to perceive children in their individuality and to support their educational and developmental processes professionally.

Course of study

Your six-semester course is systematically structured and leads you step by step to comprehensive pedagogical skills. In the first two semesters, you will acquire basic knowledge of educational science disciplines and gain an understanding of the childhood education profession. Initial work shadowing and a two-week block placement will give you an early insight into practice.

In the third and fourth semesters, you will deepen your knowledge of child development and education in various areas - from language and motor skills to social and emotional development. In accompanying internships, you will learn how to apply this knowledge and design child-oriented educational programs. Method workshops and project studies will develop your creative and scientific skills.

The fifth semester is all about practice: in a 60-day internship, you will gain extensive professional experience and carry out your own educational and research project. In the final sixth semester, you will deal with organizational, legal and cooperative aspects of childhood education and write your Bachelor's thesis on a topic of your choice from the field of early education.

Professional areas where you can get started

Educational specialist in childcare facilities
You will design development-promoting educational programs in crèches, kindergartens or after-school care centers. You will observe and document children's learning processes and develop pedagogical concepts. With your in-depth specialist knowledge, you will create a stimulating learning environment and accompany children sensitively in their individual development.

Specialist advice for daycare centers
You advise and support educational teams in their professional development. You will analyze pedagogical concepts, organize further training and support quality development processes. With your expertise, you will contribute to the continuous improvement of educational work in daycare centers.

Working in early intervention
You will support children with developmental delays or disabilities by providing targeted support. You will diagnose individual needs, draw up support plans and work together with other specialists on an interdisciplinary basis. With your holistic view, you will recognize resources and support children and their families with empathy.

Management of family centers
You develop needs-based services for families and coordinate various support services. You network relevant stakeholders in the social space and design low-threshold counseling services. With your understanding of family life, you create places where people can meet and support each other.

Educational specialist in open child and youth work
You design extracurricular educational and leisure activities for children of different age groups. You create spaces for participation and self-efficacy experiences. You use your creative and methodological skills to stimulate cultural, scientific and social education processes.

Working in educational advice centers
You advise parents and families on educational issues. You identify support needs and arrange further help if required. With your systemic view of family dynamics and your appreciative attitude, you will strengthen parental skills and promote the well-being of the children.
