Do students really tick differently than they used to?

Continuing education in higher education didactics deals with the changes and transformation processes of the generations.

Various scientists and research institutes in the field of youth and socialization research (K. Hurrelmann, U. Bauer, C. Scholz and others) have established that certain characteristics and traits of a generation develop approximately every 15 years during the formative period of youth as a result of economic, social, political and societal changes and influences. Personality development achieves the greatest and most complex formative and developmental tasks for young people in the developmental phase of adolescence (approx. between the ages of 12 and 16). According to this generational logic, those born between around 1995 and 2010 belong to "Generation Z" (Zee / See) - or "Generation youtube" - and are currently shaping university life.

As part of the "University Social Work" project, various university didactic training courses and events on this topic took place last year. In terms of content, these dealt with the question of whether students and young people tick differently today than they used to. In addition to further training for university lecturers and staff, lectures and workshops for all university members took place in the past academic year, planned and carried out jointly with students at both locations.

The aim of these events is to strengthen mutual understanding of various phenomena of student life and youth cultures on the one hand - and academic requirements and expectations on the other. In order to strengthen the student self-image and facilitate the transition from school to university, a comprehensive poster was developed in the summer semester, which gives students in their first semester the opportunity to deal with the demands and topics of academic life with various target group-oriented information, overviews and an interactive study plan. The folding poster is distributed to all students during the induction days.

After the preparatory work on content, the next phase of content processing will begin in winter semester 2017/18. Based on the findings, there is now the possibility of concrete, goal-oriented discourse and a theory-practice transfer to various areas of university life (e.g. teaching/examination, junior staff/marketing, communication/advice, study organization, etc.). The first opportunity for professional exchange is the second part of the HDS continuing education course "Why are students so different today than in the past". In addition to refreshing the content and adding the latest findings, the aim of the training is above all to develop and discuss concrete measures for dealing successfully with the change processes and developments in relation to the currently changing generation of students.

Registrations for remaining places are still possibleat here .

We would be delighted if representatives of the various status groups from all faculties and central institutions took part in order to facilitate a diverse interdisciplinary and interdepartmental exchange.
