Special needs education conference meets in HSZG

On May 2 and 3, 2018, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences hosted the Special Education Day.

On 2 and 3 May 2018, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences hosted the Curative Education Fac ulty Day. The Curative Education Faculty Day is a voluntary association of the 13 member universities in Germany that have curative education departments or Bachelor's and/or Master's degree courses. We were able to welcome a total of 10 representatives from the universities in Berlin, Bochum, Bonn, Darmstadt, Freiburg, Münster, Ludwigsburg and Nordhausen. We were also joined by representatives from the German Rectors' Conference, the Standing Conference of Training Institutes for Special Needs Education in Germany and the Professional and Specialist Association for Special Needs Education. The conference focused on the Federal Participation Act (BTHG), which represents an important milestone in the process of implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Germany.

The BTHG not only determines the framework conditions for professional curative education in the future, but also calls on curative education as a profession to effectively shape the realization of the guaranteed participation rights and benefit entitlements. In this respect, it is important to examine the existing training concepts to determine what contribution they are already making to this process and should make in the future. Accordingly, the discussions in various working groups on the central concepts of the BTHG (self-determination and person-centredness, disability and participation, assistance and social space orientation/de-institutionalization) were followed by an intensive exchange of experiences on the current implementation of the BTHG in the respective universities. The next departmental conference will take place in the 2018/19 winter semester at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigsburg and will focus on the specific curricular consequences resulting from the consequences of the BTHG and the further development of the Specialist Qualifications Framework for Curative Education.

The Curative Education/Inclusion Studies course would like to thank the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences for its support and all students who helped us with the preparation and follow-up of the departmental conference, especially with the preparation of the minutes.
