Fraunhofer is planning a small new building for 15 researchers next to the Bluebox on the Görlitz university campus.
Intensive preparations are currently underway for the imminent demolition of the former administration building House III in Zittau in the coming months. Even though the university will be saying goodbye here, a new door will be opening soon. This time on the university campus in Görlitz.
A smallnew building is to bebuiltright next to the Bluebox with a usable area of around 320 square meters . Construction work is expected to start this year.
The new building will then be home to the Fraunhofer IT security research group and the cyber security learning laboratory with 15 employees under the direction of Görlitz computer science professor Jörg Lässig.
The background to this is the cooperation between the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The Cybersecurity Learning Lab for Critical Infrastructures was officially launched in Görlitz on January 11, 2017 (here to read more). Procedures and techniques for the IT security of critical infrastructures are researched here and components and software modules for the protection of these systems are developed at the same time. Simulated cyberattacks help to identify vulnerabilities so that attacks can be detected and prevented as quickly as possible in the future. In addition, training courses are to be developed and held for representatives from industry on the subject of internet security.
According to Prof. Jörg Lässig, the construction project is currently in the planning phase. Among other things, a seminar room for Fraunhofer Institute training courses is to be created in the new building. 20 participants will then be able to receive training on cyber attacks and how to defend against them and gain practical experience thanks to state-of-the-art hardware equipment.
Research laboratories for scientific staff are also planned. Students at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will also be able to benefit directly from the expertise of the research group. The new building is a very suitable contact point for this.
