University members in dialog

At the Teaching Day on May 10, the members of the HSZG obtained comprehensive information about system accreditation.

At this year's Teaching Day on May 10 in Görlitz, members of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences learned about the key requirements and procedural steps for system accreditation. With the support of the Center for e-Learning, this year's event was broadcast simultaneously to the Zittau campus via video conferencing for the first time.

The Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christa Maria Heidger, welcomed the forty or so participants at both campuses, gave a brief introduction to the topic and then presented a brochure entitled "Impulses for Teaching Practice at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences", which was hot off the press.

Dr. Sibylle Jakubowicz from the agency evalag then presented the system accreditation procedure with its specific requirements defined in the rules of the Accreditation Council as well as the distinctive advantages and disadvantages. In her presentation, Dr. Peggy Sommer from the Quality Management Office followed on from the previous speaker and highlighted the status quo and the next steps on the way to applying for system accreditation at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in the coming year.

After a short break, selected topics and instruments of quality management were discussed in more detail at three themed tables: Table 1 dealt with the appreciation of teaching at the university. Among other things, it became clear that there are differences in the self-perception of lecturers in this regard between the individual faculties and that the appreciation of teaching regularly competes with the appreciation of research activities. In addition, possibilities and ways to increase appreciation were discussed, starting with the small things, such as treating each other with respect in everyday teaching and working life.

The second table topic was dedicated to teaching evaluation. Central points of discussion were the effort and timing of student surveys on courses and modules, the scope of the questionnaires, but also the evaluation of the results together with the students and possible consequences in the event of persistently poor teaching.

The participants at topic table 3 discussed the players and the process of a new procedure for the assessment of degree programs by external experts - the so-called degree program review procedure. This procedure is to be tested in the coming months in the form of a pilot. In the future, it will replace the program accreditation of degree programs. Finally, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christa Maria Heidger summed up the afternoon of discussion and bid farewell to the participants in the early evening.

The organizers would like to thank the speakers and guests for their contributions to the discussion, the supervisors of the topic tables for moderating and documenting the results and all the hard-working hands and supporters who contributed to the success of the day.
