Research Associate (m/f/d) MetallPCM - Keyword: 27-2025 MetallPCM -

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences | Application deadline: 06.07.2025

At the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Institute of Process Engineering, Process Automation and Metrology (IPM), the Department of Metrology/Process Automation is conducting a research project funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) entitled "MetalPCM - Development of latent heat storage systems based on metallic PCM for a sustainable process heat supply" as soon as possible for a position (1.0 FTE) as a

Research Associate (m/f/d) MetalPCM - Reference: 27-2025 MetallPCM -

to be filled for a limited period until 30.06.2027.

In the MetallPCM research project, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is working with Fraunhofer IFAM to develop a demonstrator for a metal-based high-temperature latent heat storage system. The aim is to make metallic PCMs (phase change materials) technically and economically viable for storing industrial process heat. The IPM takes on central tasks in system integration, control and validation of the storage system in the pilot plant.

By building up technological expertise in the field of heat storage and automation, the project is making a concrete contribution to structural change in Upper Lusatia.

If you would like to help shape innovative storage technologies and develop practical solutions for the energy transition, then become part of our team in the "MetallPCM" project!

The job includes the following tasks in particular

  • Planning and implementation of the automation of the storage demonstrator, including the creation of control concepts for loading and unloading cycles, the selection of suitable automation technology (e.g. PLC, HMI, data logger) and integration into the existing control technology of the Zittau power plant laboratory (ZKWL),
  • Commissioning and parameterization of the test system, in particular by programming and calibrating the controlled systems (e.g. temperature control, valve control, safety shutdowns), real-time data acquisition of relevant process variables (temperature, pressure, flow rate, power) and setting up cyclical test series to evaluate the operating behavior,
  • Interface work with the areas of measurement technology, simulation and test planning, in particular through close cooperation with the thermodynamics team, feedback of technical measurement data to the modeling and simulation partners and support in coordinating the energy supply (e.g. thermal oil circuit, heating elements),
  • Carrying out error analyses during operation and deriving and implementing optimization measures in the control process to ensure operational safety and control stability,
  • Assistance in a scientific context, in particular by recording test runs, evaluating control behavior, preparing technical documentation and reports for the project team and providing support for publications and presentations.

The following knowledge and skills are required

  • Completed university degree in the field of automation and mechatronics,
  • Practical experience and specialist knowledge in the automation and control of energy technology processes,
  • Experience in working with programmable logic controllers, in particular from the manufacturer Wago,
  • Very good knowledge of the Codesys 2.3, Codesys 3.5 and e!cockpit development environments or similar
  • Ability to program (IEC 61131-3) and optimize automation solutions
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Java), ideally for the integration or expansion of automation systems,
  • Experience with database solutions for recording, storing and analyzing process data,
  • Ability to create concepts for control technology structures and knowledge of communication protocols and network integration (e.g. OPC UA, Modbus TCP/UDP),
  • Understanding of the physical and technical fundamentals of energy technologies, such as thermodynamic processes, power plants or renewable energies,
  • good written and spoken English and
  • Confident handling of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs.

In addition, the following are desirable

  • If possible, many years (3 years) of relevant professional experience,
  • Knowledge and experience in the implementation of modern control strategies,
  • experience in the use of cloud services for process control or monitoring and
  • experience in the use of edge computing technologies for decentralized data processing in automation systems.

We expect from you

  • A high level of commitment to practical, application-oriented research,
  • Willingness to collaborate across disciplines and build technical expertise,
  • reliable participation in the implementation of a publicly funded third-party project,
  • Committed and team-oriented way of working,
  • goal-oriented and independent implementation of work tasks,
  • Willingness and interest in further professional and personal development.

We offer you

  • an interesting and challenging field of activity,
  • flexible and family-friendly working hours within the framework of the applicable service agreement and part-time options,
  • personal and professional development opportunities through targeted further and advanced training,
  • attractive social benefits (company pension scheme, annual special payment, capital-forming benefits),
  • company health management with offers for workplace health promotion and the opportunity to use a job ticket.
Further information

The remuneration for tariff employees is up to EG 12 TV-L if the professional requirements are met (with at least 3 years of relevant professional experience). The 1st place of work is Zittau. A probationary period will be agreed. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences strives for a balanced staff structure and therefore welcomes applications from people of all genders. Severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration if they have the same professional qualifications. Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences has set itself the goal of increasing the proportion of women in teaching and research and therefore expressly encourages women to apply.
