Exhibition: “Preventing Barriers—Time for Accessible Action!”
October 30 through November 9 at Haus Z I in Zittau.
Visit, Learn, and Get Involved—with these three keywords, we invite students and staff at the university to attend the exhibition. Both in our professional and personal lives, we repeatedly experience the diversity of our fellow human beings and the resulting special needs. In the lobbies at the Hochwaldstraße entrance, two exhibition modules bring selected forms of disability to life.
Why?
People who do not have visual or hearing impairments, for example, often cannot imagine how these limitations affect the daily lives of those affected. Raising awareness, however, is the foundation for creating an environment that is as barrier-free as possible. This is an important issue that is also the focus of the exhibition organized by the Saxon State Ministry of Social Affairs and Consumer Protection and our university.
The diversity of people also requires solutions in the day-to-day life of the HSZG that help compensate for disadvantages. People with disabilities are particularly dependent on this. They do not want special attention. Like everyone else, they need acceptance and participation to foster their self-efficacy.
The HSZG’s “Inclusion 2025” Action Plan, published in February 2018, addresses the special responsibility of all university members (staff and students) for implementing the rights of people with disabilities in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD).
The action plan defines individual measures with inclusion goals across five areas of action and allocates resources to support them. The areas of action are:
● University Organization
● Human Resources
● Academic Studies: Teaching and Examinations, including internships and semesters abroad
● Architectural Accessibility
● Communicative accessibility
The university is thus also responding to the policy call to address disability more actively in the context of studies and teaching, as well as in its role as an employer. Inclusion can be a key driver for the renewal of processes and structures, as well as for the ongoing review of the university’s own stance.
