The remit of the University Council is laid down in Section 86 of the Saxon Higher Education Autonomy Act (Sächsisches Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz). Its role is to make recommendations concerning the University's profile, and to promote its overall performance and competitiveness. Among other things it is responsible for making recommendations for the election of the Rector, and to approve the University's developmental and economic planning blueprint and annual financial statement.
