Academic and professional background

  • Studied special needs education at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt on Main. 1986: certificate of proficiency for teaching in special education. 1987: Diplom in Pedagogy. 1995: Doctorate (Dr. phil.).
  • Periods of professional activity in a Kinderladen (alternative kindergarten, 1987-88), the Frankfurt Freie Schule (1988-90), as academic staff member at the Frankfurt University’s Institute for Special Needs Education (1990-95, specializing in “Special needs education in the Third World”, “Intercultural Comparative Special Needs Education”). Since 1996 professor for inclusion studies at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, specializing in general inclusion studies, work with the disabled, placement advice. Visiting professor at Vienna University in the winter semester 2005-06, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz (2006-09).
  • Several periods of research and work in Ecuador, member of the editorial staff for the journal Disability and the Third World (today Disability and International Development, 1990-2004), long-standing member of the Federal Committee on Disability and the Third World (Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Behinderung und Dritte Welt)
