With the shortage of raw materials, the need to develop new environmentally friendly and sustainable production processes, and the provision of innovative medical agents and diagnostic methods, biotechnology has become a key technology of the future in recent years. Biotechnological processes and methods are being used in more and more sectors and have become a central component of both science and the German economy. According to a study by management consultants Ernst & Young (German Biotechnology Report 2012), around 10,000 employees currently work in just under 400 pure biotechnology companies in Germany. In Saxony alone, according to undefinedbiosaxony e.V., there are about 80 companies active in the biotechnology environment, especially in the Dresden and Leipzig areas, in addition to more than 30 university and non-university research institutions.

In the accredited bachelor program 'Molecular Biotechnology' of the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz students are trained for the application in molecular genetics, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry, bioanalytics, toxicology, microbiology and bioprocess engineering. The teaching concept deliberately imparts broad-based fundamental knowledge in order to provide a sound basis for starting a career in the very different sub-disciplines of biotechnology.

The course content is based on the recommendations for training in undergraduate courses in biotechnology published by Dechema (Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V.). The seven-semester course is designed to impart a strong understanding of the unity of scientific, technical, economic and ecological interrelationships.
