Institutes

Several research institutes have emerged from our University’s tradition. In these, committed and proactive professors have instituted a wide range of research projects – often of an inter-disciplinary and cross-faculty nature – alongside and beyond the research and development projects carried on in the faculties themselves. The resultant institutes have a successful track record in attracting research commissions, thus working on the solution of research and development problems in a variety of areas.

Education, Information and Communication (BIK)

The objective of the Institute for Education, Information and Communication is to assist the transfer of its academic insights into the world of praxis and so to promote the critical reflection, appreciation and ongoing development of inter-human and technology-based structures and processes of communication, information and education in social and industrial contexts.

Among the Institute's essential fields of activity are

  • interdisciplinary, application-oriented research into issues of inter-human and technology-based communication, information and education - especially from the points of view of psychology, informatics, linguistics and pedagogy.
  • the provision of advisory and expert opinion services on current issues that fall within the Institute’s remit.

Health, Ageing, Technology (GAT)

The objective of the Institute of Health, Ageing, Technology with its interdisciplinary structure and outreach is the transfer of its findings into the world of praxis, on the interface between individual and societal ageing processes and existing structures for the provision of healthcare and nursing. Its primary focus are the technical and social opportunities for the assistance of senior citizens and their kin, but also of nursing and medical professionals involved in outpatient and stationary treatment.

The Institute ties in with other successful trans-faculty research collaborations such as the VATI – Building Trust in Assistive Technology for the Inclusion of Senior Citizens project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It includes a survey among the ageing population in the Görlitz district on their current experiences with technical aids designed to support an independent living. In doing so, the project identifies barriers that hinder the full enjoyment of such devices and records desires and requests for future improvements. A complementary endeavour is the development of an Online Technology Navigator for comprehensive and neutral information on the assistive technology systems available in our region.

Surface Engineering (IOT)

The Institute of Surface Engineering was established as a central scientific institution of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in January 2006. It brings together the competence of three faculties - Mechanical Engineering, Natural and Environmental Sciences, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - in the area of surface engineering. More recently, this major focus has been supplemented by a further research interest in adhesive and bonding technology and in the strength-optimized and break-resistant construction of component parts.

The IOT’ fields of activity are:

  • industry-oriented R&D projects,
  • Advisory and expert opinion services,
  • (Continuing) Education to maintain a high potential qualified labour force in our region

The IOT’s core areas of competence are:

  • Surface pre-conditionings
  • Surface activation and coating by means of low-pressure and atmospheric-pressure plasma technology
  • Determination of coat and surface properties

  • Break-resistant and strength-optimized component part design

  • Adhesive and bonding technology

Ecology and Environmental Protection (IÖU)

The Institute for Ecology and Environmental Protection provides a trans-faculty platform for research and development in the fields of planned environmental protection, regional planning, environmental informatics and the neighbouring areas. It organizes symposia and training programmes, and acts in an advisory capacity.

It works on

  • the prevention of air and water pollution,
  • alternative energies,
  • geographical information systems,
  • eco-auditing and
  • life-cycle analysis.

Process Development, Peat and Natural Materials Research (iTN)

The Institute’s history

Since about 1999, researchers at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences have carried out a variety of R&D projects on the processing and refinement of peat for the creation of peat-based wellness and personal care products.

On account of the manifold ramifications of the project, an ever-increasing network of research contacts has emerged interlinking a variety of basic research specialists within and outside the University. In December 2005, after several years of successful and mutually fruitful interdisciplinary work, this culminated in the scientists and academics involved coming together and agreeing on the founding of an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional research institute.

After all necessary formalities had been met, the ‘Institute for Research into Peat and Natural Materials (iTN)’ was duly established at HSZG by decree of the Senate on 19 June 2006.

Given the necessary and intended combination of pure research and application-oriented research, and with a view to the requirements of the industrial and commercial markets, it was subsequently agreed to expand the Institute to include the field of ‘Process Development’ as a link ensuring the practical, adaptive implementation of research results. Hence the iTN was renamed ‘Institute for Process Development and Peat and Natural Materials Research’.

The iTN brings together academics and scientists from the following institutions:

  • Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences,
  • IHI Zittau International Graduate School
  • HTW Dresden University of Applied Sciences).

Specialist areas

  • Process Technology, Natural Material Process and Processing Technology,
  • Geomechanics, Geotechnology, Soil Science
  • Chemistry, Chemical Analytics, Toxicology
  • Biotechnology, Biochemical and Biomedicinal Analytics, Genetic Technology
  • Computer Science and Ecology

Fields of activity

  • Peat and Natural Material Analytics and Characterization
  • Research into Peat Processing and Refinement
  • Research into Utilization of Natural Materials
  • Landfill Site Technology and Soil Substrata Research
  • Technology Research (Substance examination and determination, treatment of organic and inorganic dispersive substances / substance mixtures)

Objectives

The iTN’s mission is to conduct research into the valuable substances present in peat and other natural materials, and into their processing and utilization, thus making an essential contribution to both research and further education on a regional, national and international plane. In order to ensure that this work remains praxis-oriented and in line with the needs, and that the applied R&D results are optimally implemented, the iTN maintains close ties with a wide range of national and international institutions – in mining, commerce and industry, in the medical, balneological and spa sectors, with national and international research centres, and with higher education institutions, authorities and diverse other associations.
